Job Summary:
Under direct general supervision of Physician the Office Assistant/Surgery Assistant is to assist and perform general duties in the course of providing care and treatment of patients in an office and/or hospital setting. To assist physician in the operating room during regular working hours and on-call. Pleasant, courteous disposition with the ability to work with patients as well as employees and physicians. Professional in conduct and appearance.
Duties:
1. Reviews patients’ medical record in preparation for office visit.
2. Prepares patient for and assists with examinations.
3. Prepares exam rooms and equipment for each patient visit.
4. Assists physician in operating room at hospital and/or surgery center.
5. ON-call with physician as per physician schedule.
6. Obtains vital signs, history and chief complaint for visit.
7. Orders and obtains medications from Clinic Pharmacy. Administers medications as ordered by Physician (oral, injectable, rectal, topical) and documents in patients’ medical record.
8. Orders laboratory, radiology and outpatient procedures as directed per Physician.
9. Assists Physician with patient examinations and diagnostic procedures in the office.
10. Contacts pharmacies for new prescription/prescription refills as ordered per physician and documents in patients’ medical record.
11. Assists patient with completing mail order forms for prescriptions as ordered per Physician.
12. Contacts insurance companies for pre-certification authorization. Documents in patient record.
13. Completes referral form on patients for Referral Clerk. If Referral clerk unavailable, nurse is to obtain referral authorization. Documents in patient record.
14. Receives and reports information regarding nursing home/hospital patients, i.e. requests for medication, procedures, and treatments, to Physician and returns calls to each per Physician order.
15. Contacts hospital with admitting information for patients.
16. Collects all lab, radiology and procedure reports for Physician review. Contacts patients regarding results as directed per Physician.
17. Answers telephone identifying self, records all patient information and requests. Returns phone calls in timely manner.
18. Floats to other areas as needed.
19. Inventories and properly discards outdated drug samples.
20. Washes and cleans instruments. Prepares instruments for autoclave.
21. Maintains confidentiality of all patient information.
22. Disposes of biohazard waste appropriately.
23. Follows security guidelines with use of the Electronic Medical Record.
24. Uses universal precautions and personal protective equipment during all patient procedures and treatments.
25. Keeps work station neat and clean.
26. Attends mandatory OSHA/Fire Safety Training annually.
Qualifications:
1. High School Diploma
2. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) training.
3. Computer knowledge.
4. Good interpersonal skills.
